The Town of Renfrew is a thriving business and commercial centre located at the second chute of the Bonnechere River in the heart of Renfrew County. Harnessing of the water power at this site heralded Renfrew’s industrial development with the McDougall Grist Mill in the 1850s, a legacy that continues with robust and dynamic manufacturing enterprise today.
Historically Renfrew is the birthplace of hockey’s NHA-NHL and the Renfrew Millionaires, home of prominent industrialists, lumber barons and proud forest workers. Known in early days as the Valley’s Creamery Town, Renfrew’s agricultural roots run deep and continue to be a mainstay of the community. The Renfrew Fair, dubbed as “The greatest fair in the Ottawa Valley since 1853” is a “must do” event in the week after Labour Day.
Renfrew has long been the established commercial hub for the area, with over 30,000 people living and working here or travelling from within the catchment area of neighbouring municipalities. Shoppers have always been well served by Renfrew merchants and continue to be attracted to the vibrant, tree-lined and well-appointed downtown core and to the new large retail outlets along the O'Brien Road corridor. Renfrew, with tradition and innovation, offers the best of both worlds as a manufacturing, business and tourist hub in the upper Ottawa Valley and proudly demonstrates that “we’re open for business”.
