Official Plan

The Town of Gananoque Official Plan (OP) is an essential planning document which is designed to manage future growth, development and change in our municipality. This Official Plan provides a framework which will guide land use decisions within the Town’s boundaries for the next 20 years.

Zoning By-Law

A zoning bylaw contains provisions that regulate the use, size, height, density and location of buildings on properties within Gananoque.  A Development Permit By-Law was adopted by Council on October 5, 2010 (Notice of Passing and Appeal Period Deadline is November 27, 2010). The Development Permit, which combines existing planning approvals such as zoning, site plan and minor variances into one development stream is a new development approval framework that replaces the Zoning By-Law.

Lowertown Masterplan

The Gananoque Lowertown Study was initiated in March 2005, as an economic development initiative and strategy for future development in the Lowertown area. The Lowertown Concept Plan is one of many economic development initiatives occurring in the town including downtown renewal, marina expansion, historical museum, as well as environmental, recreational, health services and residential projects.

Trade Analysis

In September 2007 the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs working with the Gananoque Downtown Revitalization Committee created this detailed report focusing on the trade area surrounding the Town of Gananoque. The trade area was determined by a postal code survey completed in May of 2007.

The Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP)

The Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) is a multi-million dollar Government of Canada initiative announced in the summer of 2006 that will promote rural socioeconomic development in Eastern Ontario, lead to a more competitive and diversified regional economy, and contribute to the successful development of businesses, job opportunities and sustainable, self-reliant communities. The fund will support business development, skills development, retention and attraction of youth, and access to capital.

Scientific Research and Experimental Development SR&ED

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is a federal tax incentive program to encourage Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada that will lead to new, improved, or technologically advanced products or processes. The SR&ED program is the largest single source of federal government support for industrial research and development. Claimants can apply for SR&ED investment tax credits for expenditures such as wages, materials, machinery, equipment, some overhead, and SR&ED contracts.

Gananoque Economic Development Department

Public Development

The Town of Gananoque continually invests in the community and the long term capital plan is based roads need studies, bridge studies, vehicle replacement plans, water/sewer plans and the Official Plan.

Recreation

  • The municipal marina is undergoing expansion including dock upgrades and thirty new slips scheduled for 2012.  
  • In 2010, the arena had upgrades totally $970 000. 
  • In 2010 a skateboard park was built in 2010.
  • In 2011 a BMX track was created.

Joel Stone Park

The Town of Gananoque is investing in the waterfront parkland with the expansion of the current Joel Stone Park including the installation of:

  • an 80 foot flag pole and large Canada flag
  • a bronze diorama showcasing the actual town buildings of 1812
  • period cannons and a renovated small lighthouse structure
  • an 1812 History Wall
  • an outdoor amphitheatre
  • considerable landscaping including park benches, trees and pathways

The park will also include a children's splash pad area which will serve as an added attraction to encourage children and families to visit the park and experience all the historical aspects.

Infrastructure

The roads, water and sewer infrastructure renewal project was completed on King St. West, Charles Street and Brock Street. 

Downtown Revitalization

The Town of Gananoque is investing in beautification efforts of the downtown King Street with landscaping, signage, façade grants and infrastructure improvements.
