Extensive Education Resources
Eastern Ontario’s educational institutions offer 249 programs in bio health disciplines and related areas. There are two major health science faculties at the University of Ottawa and Queen’s University. Carlton University, Trent University, UOIT and the region’s community colleges provide an extensive range of practical education in bio-health subjects.
Significant Research Capacity
Eastern Ontario is home to seven academic hospitals, which are an integral part of a significant research complex.
The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Queen’s University research covers an array of issues ranging from discovery in the basic biomedical sciences, through clinical research, validation and the development of evidence based guidelines, to population and health services research and health policy development.
The University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Health Sciences has over 100 researchers working in a variety of disciplines, from molecular biology to metabolism, from human kinetics to social sciences of health.
Carleton University has expertise in the area of mental health and networked with The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s Health Education Technology Research Unit is focused on the critical area of evidence based research through technology while Trent University’s Centre for Health Studies focuses on real world solutions for health professionals. The region’s community colleges provide applied research and collaborative opportunities for local companies including Loyalist College’s new facility the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre and Algonquin College’s design centre.

Eastern Ontario’s research complex is home to eight National Research Council institutions and research networks covering obesity, stroke, stem cells, genomics, imaging, biological sciences, and molecular sciences.

Eastern Ontario’s companies are involved in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced medical technologies, research and biomedical manufacturing. Just a few examples of key companies include Bioniche Life Sciences Inc.,(biopharmaceuticals) Octane Medical Group (Regenerative Medicine) Fate Therapeutics, Chemaphor (Stem Cells) Pillar 5 Pharma, Octane OEM (Contract Manufacturing) and CSL Behring (Biotherapeutics), Allphase Clinical Research, MTrials (Contract Research) and Improved Outcomes Software Inc., Protein Simple and TrialStat, (Bioinformatics).
Eastern Ontario is a leader in the field of Animal Health: Bioniche’s new Animal Health and Food Safety Vaccine Manufacturing Centre is the largest livestock vaccine manufacturing facility in Canada while Chemaphor, has received an NRC award for studies in companion animals.
There is also significant strength in diagnostics with global leaders Fischer Scientific, Spartan Bioscience (Ottawa), MJS BioLynx Inc., and Canadian Life Sciences. Qubit Systems Inc., Avestin, and Luzchem Research provide technology driven instrumentation solutions.
Eastern Ontario’s tradition in precision manufacturing is apparent in medical devices with companies such as GlobalMed Inc., and Advanced Mobility Systems Corp. Innovative technologies are deployed by Abbott Point of Care with its state of the art manufacturing facility. eSight Corporation, Brytech, Epocal, and Vocantis.
